It won't be long before they hit their teen years and think its "uncool" to hang with your parents! (I secretly hope this won't happen but am preparing for it) I always try to be open and honest with my kids, building strong relationships and instilling values. Parenting is a scary thing, always wondering if your doing the "right" thing. I'm so thankful to have my husband by my side. My mom raised me as a single parent and I see now how tough it was for her(and boy I never made it easy) LOVE you Mom! Much love to you single P's out there! Much love to those "step-parents" that step up and love and care for their partners kids too! I had a loving step mom and I'm happy she never gave up on me.
I was speaking with a few moms yesterday about different cultures and how they work with their kids. One conversation inspired me to try something different with my oldest son. He is VERY stubborn(not sure where that comes from*=)*) Also a very smart kid, but wants to work problems out in his head because he HATES writing. After getting his report card and parent/teacher conference what I heard most was "needs to write better" and "not paying attention". I have tried EVERYTHING with him. SO, after hearing that some cultures DO NOT have their kids doing chores or housework because they believe their focus should be on school work, a light bulb went off. Well, lets not get crazy, my kids WILL do chores, however I struck a deal with Evan. I told him for every improvement I see and hear about I will take away a day of chores and do it for him. If you knew him, you would know that he HATES doing chores so this was exciting for him. I'll let you know how it works out.
Have any of you been through a struggle or are going through one now? I like hearing experiences other parents are going through at the different stages of growth! It really helps to hear and give tips and advice.
Parenting is the HARDEST job ever!! BUT I NEVER forget what a blessing my kids are!

About the schoolwork, I think you're doing it right in the positive reinforcement. Maybe offer to take him out for lunch one day for a great score on a test or something? If he hates writing, has he every tried writing for fun?
I know it sounds crazy, but if he just tried doing it for fun instead of for schoolwork (which is agonizing for some kids!) he might find it's not as bad as he thinks?

Cute Halloween Pic! Sometimes we just have to take bits and pieces of parenting styles to find the right mixture that works for our kids. Evan is lucky to have a mother that loves him so incredibly much.

Not all teens automatically refuse to hang with their parents. I have been very lucky. It's no skill on my part - just luck so far with the two oldest.

I second writing for fun. You could get him to write the plot of his favourite movie, but then write a different ending or even get him to write a sequel to a favourite movie. Or if he's into drawing you could have him make a comic strip with conversation bubbles. If he loves the spotlight you could have him read it out to the family.
I hope my kids will want to hang out with me even when they're teens. (fingers crossed).
